PRP Joint Injection
Care Instructions
Before your Treatment
- Avoid NSAIDs: ibuprofen, naproxen, aspirin, meloxicam, etc 1 week prior to your appointment
- Avoid corticosteroid injections 4-6 weeks prior to your PRP injection
- Avoid Omega 3 supplements and alcohol 48 hours prior to your appointment
Day of your Treatment
- Avoid any medium or high intensity workouts the morning of your treatment.
- You need to drink at least 32 ounces of water prior to your treatment to help facilitate blood draw.
- Wear clothing that allows easy access to the affected joint or bring spare clothing (shorts or tank).
- Please consider having someone drive you if the joint will affect your driving. The most common joint would be the right knee.
Immediately After your Treatment
- You should expect swelling, pain, and/or tenderness in the affected joint.
- You may take acetaminophen after your appointment. You should not take any NSAIDs for at least 2 weeks after your injection.
- You should avoid submerging the affected joint in water for 72 hours after the injection (no soaking baths, swimming, or hot tubs). You may take a shower in 24 hours.
- Avoid icing the affected area for 1 week after the injection.
- Avoid smoking.
Days After your Treatment
- You can expect joint stiffness for up to 1 week after injection, the pain may even increase before getting better.
- You should avoid vigorous exercise for 1 week after the injection and ease into active over the course of 3-4 weeks.
- You may use NSAIDS 2 weeks after your treatment, but prefer you abstain if possible for best results.
- Your results are optimal with physical therapy and rehabilitation of the joint. I suggest considering physical therapy or myofascial treatment like Airrosti 1 week post injection.
- Avoid smoking for 2 weeks, as this may delay healing.
